The Wairakei International Golf Course is situated in the heart of the Lake Taupo region, on the central plateau, New Zealand. Officially opened in 1970, the course lies on 450 acres of natural rolling countryside and was developed to meet the rigorous design standards required for world class, championship competition.

The end result is a sprawling course that makes the most of the properties natural contours. The 6429 meters from the championship tees and 108 large, well placed bunkers has lead to world acclaim. According to leading Golf publication Golf Digest, Wairakei is amongst the top 100 courses in the world, outside of the USA.

The course was designed by Commander John Harris, Michael Wolveridge and Peter Thomson. Commander Harris was England’s leading and most travelled golf course architect.  Wolveridge was a man whose appreciation of the subtleties of golf course architecture was enriched by a time on the US professional tour. Australian Peter Thomson was one of the world’s greatest professionals, 5 times winner of the British open and champion of many other tour events.
